Cleaning Hacks

We know that cleaning is a task which often fills you with dread, it’s avoided and avoided until it simply has to be done. We’ve decided to give you some handy cleaning hacks to help speed up the process and leave your home cleaner and fresher than ever.

Cleaning a chopping board
In a study conducted by the NHS, chopping boards were found to harbour 200% more faecal matter than the average uk toilet bowl.

Pour coarse salt over your wooden chopping board, then, using a halved lemon scrub deep into the board, squeezing to release the lemon juice as you go. Leave this to sit for five minutes then scrape the dirty sludge off, you will be amazed at how much comes out of the woodwork! Rinse with warm soapy water and feel safe in the knowledge your board is now fresh and clean.

Bathroom blitz
Your showers may not be as clean as you think. Scientists in the US found a third of shower heads are home to a whole host of bacteria and diseases.

Mix a solution of equal parts vinegar and water and pour into a plastic bag. Tie around your shower head and leave it for 10-15 minutes. Remove and rinse.

Tackling those taps
A really effective method for cleaning taps uses just a couple of lemons. Cut them in half, then squeeze them gently into a bowl to gather some juice. Don’t use a lemon squeezer, you want to make sure the fleshy parts remain intact for the next stage. After this is complete, take a lemon half and place it on to the spout of your tap, twisting gently until it stays firmly in place. The fibres inside the lemon should catch on the edge of the spout, preventing the lemon from falling off. Now, you can simply leave it to do its wondrous descaling magic.

While the lemon is busy descaling your taps, use the juice you collected to create a cotton wool “dressing” for the rest of the tap. Wait an hour then rinse and scrub your tap clean. If any scale remains, simply replace the lemon for longer and scrub again. When all this is completed your tap should be looking clean and smelling citrusy fresh.

Microwave Mess
Microwaves can get pretty messy, but there’s an easy way to make it shine again.

Put equal amounts of water and vinegar in a microwave-safe bowl (along with a small wooden object, like a toothpick, to prevent boiling or other dangers). Then set it on high for 5 to 10 minutes.

Wait a couple minutes to let it cool, then all you have to do is wipe down the inside of the microwave with a sponge or paper towel. Now you should have a properly clean microwave without the hassle of expensive (and often non-effective) cleaners. You can also add lemon to the mixture for a fresh, clean scent!
